Dental Implant Post-Operative Instructions
Care of the mouth following a surgical procedure is essential to the healing process. There will be a certain amount of swelling, discomfort, and bleeding which can be expected. In order to minimize these, you are advised to follow these instructions below.
After the placement of a dental implant, you can expect to have some bruising and swelling. Maximum swelling will occur within the first 48 hours after surgery and may last for several days. Apply ice packs to the outside of your cheek for a period of 15 minutes on and 30 minutes off to help control the swelling. Blood in your saliva is normal for the first day or two. Place pressure on the area with the gauze provided or use a moist tea bag and gently apply pressure for 10-15 minutes. If bleeding is continuous or heavy, please call our office.
Brush your teeth as usual, keeping your mouth as clean as possible throughout your recovery, but be very careful around the surgical site where the dental implant was placed. Avoid water picks and electric toothbrushes for 2 weeks following surgery. The day after surgery, rinse with warm salt water twice a day. Avoid rigorous rinsing.
If a prescription was given for an antibiotic, start it immediately following your surgery following the correct dosage. Always take your full dose of antibiotics prescribed. If a prescription was given for the pain, use as directed. The prescription should be filled promptly and taken exactly as directed before the local anesthesia wears off. Do not drive a car, operate machinery, or drink alcoholic beverages while taking prescribed pain medications. If a prescription was not given for pain, an over-the-counter medication (aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) can be taken as directed on the label. Do not take any medications on an empty stomach as it can cause nausea.
If sutures were placed, you will need to return to the office in 10 days to have them removed. They will not dissolve on their own, so it is important to keep this appointment. Avoid playing with your implant or caps with your tongue.
Good nutrition is important to the healing process. A liquid or soft diet including yogurt, pudding, Jell-O, soup, ice cream, eggs or instant breakfast may be necessary for the first day. Chew on the opposite side of the mouth, avoiding the implant surgical site.
Do not consume spicy foods, carbonated or alcoholic beverages for the first 24 hours following implant surgery. Do not drink through a straw for the next seven days following implant surgery. Avoid smoking until the implant site has healed.
If for any reason you are concerned about your condition, please feel free to call our office. If you experience any generalized rash, itching, or increased pain, please call us immediately at (303) 220-7662.
